My days of skateboarding is over..i guess?Although i had some thought to start over again with this hobby. Lots of things happen when i skate, basically it change my life…thats also the reason why my nickname is izmalsk8 (skate).
I started skateboarding around 1997 (i think?) with the influence from my friends. Those were the days where you want to stay as a teenager & not grow old.
With tag line such as “Skateboarding is not a crime“..thats what we kept in mind whenever we skate illegally at malls,markets,street,curb,rails..anywhere that is skateable. We were chased by police, guards & sometimes pedestrian who is angry coz we vandalized their place & make noises with our boards. We were kids(duuhh)..or trying to be at that moment. Komtar was the spot where we skate during the weekend while Mutiara Court near kampung kastam on weekdays. I even when to school riding my skateboard..so what?its cheap ok…cost me, sweat & stinky smell..hehe.i kept my board at the canteen(thanks apek kantin) because we arent allowed to bring out boards to class.
Penang skate scene starts at Perangin Road..its a small deserted road in middle of town, kids use that road to put ramp, rails and funbox to skate there. They gathered, talk(lepak) & skate…i was not into skateboarding that time, im more of a grunge (nirvana, greenday) kindda kid..somehow,my friends introduce this sports to me..i was so pumped up & start borrowing boards..slip down with lots of attempts just to skate. At that time, we have no skate videos or someone to lookup for doing skate tricks.yup!we learn by ourself…i remember flicking my board and learn kickflip with friends guide. During that period, Padin was among of the talented skaters in town..we learn tricks from him. As my skaterboarding skills evolved(macam la terer sgt)..my genre of music changes as well..im into punkrock & hardcore music.
Underground/Hardcore scene in Penang is called GTHC (georgetown hardcore), Kuala Lumpur with KLHC, while Johor have their JBHC & Ipoh got something HC (totaly forgot?chemorHC?hahaha ~) Bands like Chronic Mass, Basic Rights, I Against I, Social Cure, NET, Reprisal, Projekt AK, Another Side, NOP, Slap Jaw,Disaster Funhouse..etc. were TOP in the 90′s. Gigs are held everywhere & we (me & friends) would go support even buy demo tapes(cassets) & zine. Zine is a cut off a magaZINE..its a small a5 printed DIY stuff with underground information.(kindda like a blogging at the era)
end of part 1..to be continue ~
